She made her professional theater first appearance in 1974 at the Arena Stage in Washington, D.C. In the 1977 Off-Broadway play For Colored Girls Who Have contemplated Suicide, she made it to fame during her three-episode arc in Hill Street Blues, Woodard got her first Prime time Emmy Award in 1983, in the excellent Supporting Actress in a Drama Series category.

In different made-for-television movies, Woodard got critical acclaim for her main performances. For her roles in the films Words by Heart, Unnatural Causes, and A Mother’s Bravery, she was appointed for Emmy Awards: The Mary Thomas Story.
