He started his profession at a tender age of six with multiple primary on-camera and voice-over national commercials, among them Lavoris, Hot Wheels, Campbell’s Soup, Polaroid, Rock’em Sock’em Robots, Libby’s, and Johnny Lightning. Nelson has co-featured in very many feature films, among them; Evilspeak, Mixed Company, This Property Is Condemned, You Gotta Pay the Band and If You Give a Dance. Haywood also had a two-year run on Broadway as Thieves. Nelson featured as Bobby Moore in the Kojak episode “The Godson”. At 14 years, he acted as the grandson of Whitman Mayo’s Grady on the TV series Sanford and Son before shifting on to the series Grady in 1975.

At the age of 16 years old he got the role of “Dwayne” in the TV series “Cooley High,” that afterwards became the ABC widely known series “What’s Happening!” for TOY Productions. Nelson was a “teenage heartthrob” on a famous TV series and one of the first Black teen idols. His education in Architectural Design and Electronics Engineering was interfered with when the cast of What’s Happening!! come back together for three seasons of syndication in the series continuation What’s Happening Now!! for Columbia Pictures TV, where he also worked as Technical Director. Haywood later appeared in an urban dramatic Broadway production in New York’s Lincoln Center Alice Tully Hall, as himself, in the Paramount picture Dickie Roberts, and in the TV series The Parkers.
