John Piper Biography

John born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, in the US as John Stephen Piper he is the CEO, co-founder/headteacher of desiring God.org, and the leader of Bethlehem College & Seminary.

He was a teacher of Biblical Studies at Bethel University for six years from 1974 to 1980. He then served for 33 years at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota, as Pastor for Preaching and Vision.

John is a son to the late Bill Piper, a former traveling evangelist and church planter, and the late Ruth Piper. He has a sister older than him, Beverly Piper. His mother Ruth, passed away in a bus wreck in Israel on December 16th 1974. His 1990 booklet What’s the Difference? entails her tribute. His father passed away on March 6th 2007.

John is a husband to Noël Henry, the founder of Treasuring God in Our Traditions and Faithful Women and Their Extraordinary God. The two lovers married in December 1968. He went to Wade Hampton High School then joined Wheaton College in 1964 and completed in 1968 in literature and in philosophy. He went to the University of Munich, Germany in 1971 and completed in 1974 under Leonhard Goppelt with a Doctor of Theology degree in New Testament Studies.

John Piper Prostate Cancer

Piper made public on January 11th 2006, that he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer. He together with his doctors assured his church that the cancer was fully treatable through a letter. He had surgery on February 14th 2006, which was successful.
