She auditioned for One Life to Live in on the role of Starr Manning on February 1998. This was at the age of six, and she started playing the character on March 20, 1998, and there after signed a contract with the series in April 2001. She has featured in TV ads for JC Penney, Citgo, and the Soap Network. Alderson took home the 2005 Soap Opera Digest Award for Favorite Teen for her role in One Life to Live. Eddie, Alderson’s younger brother, acted Matthew Buchanan on One Life to Live. Alderson relocated to Los Angeles with her brother after filming in One Life to Live that ended on November 18th 2011. On April 14th 2011, ABC announced the removal of All My Children and One Life to Live, leaving General Hospital.
January 11th 2012, it was said that Alderson, and previous co-stars Kassie DePaiva, Michael Easton, and Roger Howarth, would repeat their early role in One Life to Live role on ABC’s last remaining serial drama General Hospital. Kristen joined the series on February 24, 2012, and left on March 20, 2013. Prospect Park as of now owns the rights to all One Life to Live characters; TV Guide reported that ABC did not want to risk further legal wrangles with Prospect Park over the roles, the only way to avoid such wrangles could be for former One Life to Live actors to portray “roles that in no way be similar to the current ones” so as to maintain General Hospital.
September 24th 2013, Kristen was crowed “The Star of Tomorrow” by the ZEPHRA Magazine Recognition Awards, and the City of West Hollywood declared it in her honor.
January 10th 2015, Soap Opera Digest broke the news of Alderson leaving General Hospital rather than sign up another contract with the series. Her role as Kiki Jerome was recast. October 26th 2014, She sang The Star-Spangled Banner at the University of Phoenix Stadium, while the visiting Philadelphia Eagles played the Arizona Cardinals. April 2018, Kristen started acting in the Off-Broadway show The Marvelous Wonderettes as Cindy Lou. Later on in June 2018, Alderson made known her desire to return to General Hospital as Starr Manning.
