Lena Olin Early Life

Olin is the youngest of three children of actors Britta Holmberg and Stig Olin. She trained acting at Sweden’s National Academy of Dramatic Art from 1976 to 1979. Come October 1974, as she turned 19, Olin was honored Miss Scandinavia in Helsinki, Finland. Lena served as a substitute teacher, and as a hospital nurse, before she ventured in to acting.

Lena acted for over ten years with Sweden’s Royal Dramatic Theater-ensemble in plays by William Shakespeare and August Strindberg, and featured in minor roles of many Swedish films directed by Bergman and in productions of Swedish TV-Theater Company. Ingmar Bergman featured Olin in Face to Face. After one year, she started acting at the national stage in Stockholm in productions directed by Bergman, and with Bergman’s production of King Lear she traversed the world, among them Paris, Berlin, New York, Copenhagen, Moscow, and Oslo.

In 1980, she was one of the first winners of the Ingmar Bergman Award, advocated for in 1978 by the director himself, who happened to be one of the two judges. Her international first appearance in film was a minor part in Bergman’s Fanny and Alexander 1980, with Bergman afterwards featuring her in her first international lead role, just after the practice In 1988, Olin featured with Daniel Day-Lewis in her first main role in an English speaking and internationally produced film, The Unbearable Lightness of Being, followed by Sydney Pollack’s Havana, Roman Polanski’s The Ninth Gate among others.

Come 2002, Olin performed in her first American TV role, getting in to the main cast of Alias for its second, acting the role of Irina Derevko. For her job on the series, she was appointed for the Prime time Emmy Award for Outstanding helping Actress in a Drama Series in 2003. In 2005, Olin went back to Sweden for a short period of filming and featured in a helping role in Danish director Simon Staho’s film Bang Bang Orangutang. Come 2008, she performed in the Oscar-nominated film The Reader, acting a Jewish survivor of the Auschwitz death march at a trial in the 1960s and as the woman’s daughter twenty years later.
