Betha began to get into trouble on the streets of Harlem at an early age and when he was 13, his mother took him back to Jacksonville to stay with relatives. Betha first began attending church as he lived in Jacksonville. Betha began reviling the potential in him as a basketball player after going back to live in Harlem at the age of 15, becoming the head guard for his high school team at Manhattan Center during the 1993 season, where he played together with Cameron Giles, who went on to be the rapper famous as Cameron.
He had ambitions to enter the National Basketball Association (NBA), but due to his low academic scores, he was not able to make it into Division I College. He went to Purchase at New York State University, where he was raised to understand that he was not likely to make the NBA and instead began to concentrate more on writing music, making demo tapes, and playing frequently at local nightclubs. Betha finally left college and focused on a full-time music profession.

He unveiled his first solo LP, Harlem World, which started at # 1 on the U.S. first week of release on the Billboard Pop and R&B LP charts selling over 175,000 copies; it has from that time gone on to sell 4.8 million copies in the United States of America.
