Career
Prior to pursuing his profession as a comedian, he was only two classes away from getting his bachelor’s degree in English from Wayne State University and had purposed to apply to law school. Following his first on Detroit 1-8-7, he moved to Los Angeles, California. When Elia relocated to Hollywood in the year 2011, he began working on his own projects immediately, using the money he saved from working late shifts at a nightclub. Because of his astute networking potential, he was able to secure auditions for several TV series and movies despite not having any significant Hollywood representation (Elia claims he auditioned for over 400 projects before booking his first best paying job: A National ad for Honda).
He immediately began to notice a surge in film and TV roles. When The Arab American News questioned Elia about his challenges, he answered, “You have to take big risks.” Those who take meaningful chances are the ones who succeed. You will usually feel afraid, but how you react to it establishes who you are as a person. Elia has always been outspoken on his Iraqi origins, especially his Assyrian background and the challenges facing his community in the wake of the bloodshed in the Assyrian territories in Iraq. He has as well made a point of voicing the divisions that exist among the Assyrian community, especially between Chaldeans and Syriacs.
Elia has before cited his family (specifically his mother) as being one of the biggest influences in his life, because of her experiences in Iraq and her hard-working lifestyle in one of Michigan’s many impoverish neighborhoods. In respect to his comedy, Elia has sported some of his closest partners, Matt Rife and Bassem Youssef as people who have assisted to strengthen his comedy profession, including assisting him to produce Detroit Player.
