Phillip appeared in three shows with Birmingham’s Town and Gown Civic Theater, the director asked if he was interested in auditioning for the role of Jem in To Kill a Mockingbird through his mother of which he initially refused, but agreed on the condition that he miss half a day of class.Being one of the three finalists, an invitation to New York City for a screen test weeks later was granded him of which landed him the role of Jem Finch. At the time of production, his parents joined him at Hollywood and his sister had to stand-in for Mary Badham, who played Jem’s sister, Scout. Alford and Badham were always bickering and differing with each other during most of the shoots. At one time after their worst argument, he planned mischief against her. Alford’s other acting credits include: Bristle Face (1964) (TV); the role of “Boy” in Shenandoah (1965); The Intruders (1970) (TV); and Fair Play (1972) (TV). Philip’s sister, Eugenia,was the stand-in actress for child actress Mary Badham, who played Jem’s sister, Scout, in the classic film To Kill a Mockingbird (1962). Philip, who played Jem, and Mary were many times antagonistic towards each other on the set.
