Chakrabarti started serving as a reporter for the Breakfast Programme on the newly unveiled BBC Radio 5 Live in the year 1994. She afterwards served as a general news correspondent for both TV and radio. She got to the BBC as a Community Affairs correspondent in the year 1997, airing the Stephen Lawrence Inquiry and at the same time working on Home Affairs. She joined the BBC as a political correspondent in the year 1999, where she served across a variety of TV and radio programs, reporting on politics for BBC One, BBC Two, the BBC News Channel, BBC Radio 4, and BBC Radio 5 Live. She was the BBC News education correspondent in the month of January 2011.
