He was a TV news correspondent and public relations consultant before getting to politics. He was elected to Washington’s House of Representatives in the year 1974. Come 1982, he was elected as a Republican to the 98th Congress, to represent the newly made 8th district. In the race, he over powered In 1982, he was voted for by a margin of 57% to 43% over Democratic challenger Beth Bland. He worked for five terms before quitting to run unsuccessfully for the US Senate. Chandler made it publicly in the year 1989 that he is a recovering alcoholic. Chandler trained Advanced Placement Government lessons at Eaglecrest High School in Centennial, Colorado, up to the end of the 2006-07 academic year.

Chandler seemed to have the upper hand on many contest, but in a debate late in the campaign, he bizarrely reacted to Murray’s criticism for spending $120,000 on congressional mailings in the middle of an economic downturn by quoting the Roger Miller song “Dang Me”. Chandler was as well harmed by incumbent President George H. W. Bush’s unpopularity in the Pacific Northwest, where he was majorly blamed for the recession.

Chandler was one of 12 former Republican United States Representatives who filed an amicus brief in Trump v. Anderson, helping the Colorado Supreme Court’s final virdict to stop former President Donald Trump from running once again in the year 2024 presidential election.
