Vaessen Career
Come 1994, she started serving with the Nederlandse Omroep Stichting (NOS) news-department. In the year 1996, she was the NOS South-East Asia correspondent, staying in Jakarta. After a decade serving at NOS in Jakarta, she relocated to Al Jazeera English in 2006. She witnessed first hand most of the main news happenings in Asia: the fall of president Soeharto in the year 1998, the violent aftermath of the referendum for independence in East Timor, the Rohingya crisis in Myanmar, the protests against Jakarta governor Basuki Tjahaya Purnama, the Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004 and major natural disasters in Indonesia, Pakistan, the Philippines, and several religious and ethnic conflicts. She aired stories in China, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Vietnam, Japan and South Korea. She made very many documentaries for 101 East: Indonesia’s killing fields on anti-communist massacres in the year 1965, Indonesia’s Rock governor about the rise of president Joko Widodo as well as a film for the Correspondent series: Trail of Murder, Indonesia’s bloody retreat from East Timor, that was chosen Best Documentary at the Asian television Awards in Singapore. For Talk to Al Jazeera she did numerous interviews with Indonesia’s president Joko Widodo and Jakarta’s governor Basuki Tjahaya Purnama. On Sunday, August 7th 2011, she was the third guest for the 2011 season on the TV program Zomergasten on the VPRO. On June 20th 2012, she happened to be the speaker at the Arondéus Lecture, to talk about the theme of intolerance in the Netherlands and efforts by politicians to limit free speech. Now situated in Moscow, Step Vaessen before then reported on Asia for over 20 years and was one of the most senior international journalists covering the region.
