From the month of August 1999 to 2001, she was a reporter and news anchor at WBTW in Florence, South Carolina. In September 2001, she got to WTKR in Norfolk, Virginia, as a military announcer. She reported from Iraq at the time of the 2003 Iraq War and was employed by ABC News that same year. Sy reported for ABC NewsOne from London until the year 2006, when she served as a correspondent in New York. Come 2007, she became ABC’s Asia correspondent in Beijing. Sy moved to New York in the year 2009 and remained there until she left the network in the year 2012. Other ABC jobs include occasional hosting of Global News Now. Sy worked as a senior editor and reporter at Daily Health from the year 2012 to 2013.

She got to Al Jazeera America in 2013 and took part in different news programs, majorly Monday morning news, and was an occasional commentator on Al Jazeera’s talk show until the network came to an end in 2016. Freelance writer for Yahoo News, many times doing interviews. He has been serving as a freelancer for CNN and CNN International from November 2017. Hosted by CNN Business’s Maggie Lake. He as well serves as a freelance writer for Yahoo News and CBSN, the online streaming service of CBS News. Sy contributed to PBS NewsHour Weekend as she served as a freelance reporter. She was appointed for PBS NewsHour West in the year 2019, based at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism at Arizona State University in Phoenix, and is as well a correspondent for PBS NewsHour.
